An old photo of the Pocahontas County Horse Show held in Hillsboro in 1915 sparked the idea to recreate a fair to celebrate the heritage of the Little Levels area. The fair is designated to showcase local talent and products, and to serve as a fundraiser for volunteer and civic organizations of the area. Our goal is to preserve as much of the history and heritage as possible through written stories and pictures of the area.
The 2005 theme "The Civil War Era in the Little Levels" was focused on the sentiments and hardships of the people of the area as their husbands, sons and fathers joined the conflict. General William Averell's Union Army camped in the valley prior to the Battle of Droop Mt. General Averell is said to have spent the evening at the home of Col. Paul McNeel, a Confederate. Confederate Col. Wm. L. "Mudwall" Jackson camped at Millpoint with the 19th & 20th Virginia, a loose knit army of mostly local farmers. The engagement at Droop Mountain on November 6, 1863 brought the Confederate army under General John Echols up from Lewisburg. Many area residents have stories that have been passed down about their families' involvement in the conflict at the time the State Of West Virginia was born.
The "Old Home Places" book published by the Fair lists many homes that were used as hospitals. We are trying to compile a list of the location of area Civil War graves. Many in this area are descendants of the original settlers. Many of the old homes are no longer standing, however the home place remains in the heart and soul of those who have been a part of the community. It is our hope that the Little Levels will always be "a place to come home to."
